"Try to leave this world a little better than you found it and,
when your turn comes to die,
you can die happy in feeling that at any rate you have not wasted your time but have done your best."

Scouts of the World Award

INTRODUCTION
The Scouts of the World Award (SWA) is an initiative from the World Organisation of Scout Movement to help National Scout Organisations revitalise the programme of Senior Sections (15-26 age range) by giving young people more opportunities to face the challenges of the future as identified by the Millennium Declaration unanimously adopted by the 189 member countries of the United Nations in 2000. The Award is open to both Scouts and non-Scouts.

The Award concerns global citizenship-preparation for young adults and emphasises three core-themes which demand understanding, skills and knowledge, for improved life on a small planet: Environment, development or peace. It shows that a young person is aware of world issues and has acquired through a voluntary service the necessary experience and skills to become a citizen of the world.

The Award attracts, empowers and engages youth in action of world importance. That action is based upon universal values - freedom, tolerance, equality, equality, respect for nature, shared responsibility - respected in any culture and enshrined in the United Nation’s Millennium Declaration. Scouting has promoted those same values for almost 100 years. It also presents an opportunity for National Scout Organisations to develop partnerships and to help each other share human resources and knowledge.

SCOUTS OF THE WORLD AWARD IN SINGAPORE
The Scouts of the World Award programme in Singapore started in 2006 and since then have been progressing and developing steadily. The Singapore SWA base has seen through nine Discovery workshops with a total of 115 participants, including 24 international participants from Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Maldives and Thailand, and also two non-Scouts. Five Voluntary Service projects have also been completed, including one that has developed into a long-term partnership with a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

In 2007, The Singapore Scout Association successfully produced the first batch of awardees. To date, we have a total of 34 recipients.

The Scouts of the World Award programme has been integrated into The Singapore Scout Association's Rover Progress Scheme in 2007, and in 2013, the programme was also integrated into the Venture Scout Training Scheme.

Today, the Singapore base has developed into a well-established and recognised Scouts of the World Base in the Asia-Pacific Region. It has also developed into one of the strongest non-core youth programme in The Singapore Scout Association, and is continuing to develop.

PROGRAMME
The Scouts of the World Award Award consists of two component - Scouts of the World Discovery and Scouts of the World Voluntary Service.

Scouts of the World Discovery - 'Exploring, Responding and Taking Action'. This discovery component is a 3-day residental workshop that uses role-plays, activities and field trips to expose participants to different aspects of social and environmental concerns.

Scouts of the World Voluntary Service - The Voluntary Service component is a period of personal commitment to support a community project in the field of environment, development or peace. The project corresponds to a period of at least 14 full day services - either in one stretch or several bursts, and should be benefical and making a difference to the community or the environment.
